Boy Scout Troops 524
Established 1952
About our Troop
Over the course of 61 years, Troop 524 of Zebulon is happy to say we have at least 79 Eagle Scouts as of 2020, and around 40 great scouts and leaders currently in the troop!
Boy Scouts Troop 524 of Zebulon N.C. was founded back in the year 1952, making our troop 61 years old as of 2021, not factoring the 8 years of disbanding. Even though the troop was founded in 1952, the troops populartiy in the town did not really pick up until 1967, and knowledge about the troop pre-1967 is extremly scarce, we don't even know who founded the troop! What we do know though is that the troop still met at Zebulon Baptist Church, but not inside like we do today. Back then, the troop accually had its own little "Scout Hut" as it was called where the troop would meet for annuel meetings. Another thing we know is that there were around eight scouts that achived Eagle rank in this time! One of the first, if not THE first Eagle scout of troop 524 was James Debnam, who later went on to found Debnam Hardware Store in the middle of the town of Zebulon, which is still in buisness and quite an active store today, even getting bought out by ACE Hardware (but it got to keep the name Debnam Hardware)! Besides this great story of success of the troop's former scout, there is really not much more we know about the troop at this time.
Events post-1967 on the other hand have real documents to back up they happened, and not just people! Most likely due to new management, attendence and new recruit scout numbers started to rise in this time. Also around this time an icon of the troop was formed when somebody had the idea to start putting all the names of the scouts that achieved Eagle rank from this troop on the troop tralier we take with us when we go camping! This neat icon and trivia is still being kept up today and certainly catches the eye at Summer Camps and Camporees. The first recorded Eagle scout from the troop to be put on the trailer was Crafton H. in 1972, followed by Henry E. the same year. From 1973 to 1979, eleven more scouts also achived Eagle rank from Troop 524! The new and improved troop seemed to be doing good for itself, but with so many scouts achiving Eagle or aging out, and just not enough scouts to take their place, Troop 524 faced no other choice than to "Temporarily Disband" until they could get more members.
It had been 8 years since the disbanding, and many kids wanted to join Boy Scout's but there was no troop in Zebulon. Mr. Pulley (Frank Pulley) noticed this, and after fundrasing and advertising, he had finally got enough scouts to reform Troop 524 in 1987. Soon after in November 1987 the first known historian of the Troop, Ryan F., made the first troop scrapbook- Volume I lasting from November 5th 1987 to August 19th 1989, and later Volume II lasting from September 30th 1989 to December 8th 1991. These books would finally give solid information about the Troop until December 1991 when he either lost intrest in being historian or just got out-voted in the troop elections in October 1991. Still, during his time as historian Ryan documented Troop 524's sudden success in it's first camporee back- The 1988 Spring Camporee. He documented Troop 524's first place ribbon's in "Best Gateway", "Best Campsite", and "Best Overall Troop". He did the same in the Fall Camporee of the same year when Troop 524 won "Best Overall Troop" and "Best Overall Troop in the Sequoyah District" (as well as six other awards)!
After Ryan Fox, the next person to take the role of Historian was Sam M. making Volume III of the Troop Scrapbook lasting from January 19th 1992 to December 3rd 1993. After this date, the next historian's of the Troop would not continue the scrapbook, making our knowledge of the troop from 1994 to 2016 very limited. The role was finally retaken in 2017 by Fredrick B. making a speech that he read at the January 2017 Court of Honor, which mainly recaped all of what Ryan Fox documented about the Troop back in 1988. Finally on July 9th 2017, Chris J. made Volume IV of the scrapbook (with some pages from 2013 to early 2017). Since then, Troop 524 has won the Spirit Stick on multiple occasions such as at Camp Campbell in 2018 and Camp Bud Schiele in 2021, Colby L. coined "8 A Plate" for the new slogan of Troop 524's Chicken Plate Fundraiser Sale, and won the Mountian Man award at Camp Daniel Boone Summer Camp in 2019 (the highest award you could get that year) just to name a few. Our Troop ever since 1988 has been running smoothly with now 25+ scouts and Scrapbook VI started on July 11th 2021!
Most information from the text was provided by Mr. Pulley in 2020 and historians Ryan F. in 1992, Sam M. in 1993, Fredrick B. in 2017, and Chris J. in 2019. To learn more about this troops Scrapbook and Website, click on the their links.
